Try reading "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka. It is about a guy who turns into a human-size cockroach, and then proceeds to shrink in size throughout the book. The adjustments he needs to make to his life, and those of his family are both poignant and hilarious. (About 55 pages long)

You can also read "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck. This one is about a poor Mexican family that finds a precious pearl, and all the trouble it actually brings. One of the themes is "be careful what you wish for." I really think you'll like it. (About 93 pages)

Happy reading! : )

Monster is a good one. It's not a picture book or anything, but it's an easy read and popular with pre-teens and teenagers. It's told from the perspective of a boy who is on trial for murder. You really see how he's a normal teenager who made a poor decision (and you're forced to decide if he really even committed the crime).

Baseball in April is a book of short stories about Hispanic people in modern America (I think America anyway). Some of the stories are awesome.

Of MIce and Men.
It's about 100 pages I think and an excellent book.
Plus, the movie version with John Malkovich follows the book really closely.
