The idea of the swords being beaten into plowshares and nails was originally a comment that the tools of war should be put aside and instead of the efforts of making weapons to kill people, we should grow food, build homes, and raise families and live in peace.

The cultivation of land once was done by using limbs and sticks. They wore out very easily and broke when the soil was dry and hard. Once a piece of metal could cover the end of a stick, then it could cut through he sod easier and not wear out. The more time it took to grow the food, the less time there was for other task. It was not until farmers could grow enough food to support themselves and others, that communities could become more complex. Teachers could be full time teachers rather than full time farmers and part time teachers. The knowledge base could increase from generation to generation.

The ability to work metal could only be performed by a blacksmith. Heating the ore and pounding it help remove the impurities in the metal.

And when they cut NASA funding, they realized how much the space program contributed to the technology used by everyone.

A metal plowshare allows you to cultivate fields that were previously useless. More land is now habitable to you. Your ability to migrate is greatly enhanced since you can take advantage of more marginal lands than your competitors. The fact that you can now put far land under cultivation at one time means you do not have to be nomadic.
