disassemble it within reason. brush the dust from it with a clean paintbrush . saturate the chamber and bore in a powder solvent , then wipe it dry. remove the solvent by pulling a soft cloth patch thru the bore.
use a metallic bore brush down the bore and then pull a cloth patch thru it a couple of times. follow that with a patch lightly saturated with gun-oil.( 3 in 1 ). last, run a dry cloth patch down the bore and remove all the oil you can.
next, oil the rest of the weapon , wipe it completely dry and reassemble it.
to maintain it, keep it in this cleaned fashion
in a soft guncase, where the kids cant get at it, unloaded.
if its a weapon you use daily , such as a law officer or a guard would need , you need to clean it as often as possible and keep it free from the elements( rain, dirt, etc ), but no less than once a week. clean it daily if you have the time.
peace

It depends on what type of gun it is but most of them are similiar. You can buy a weapons cleaning kit at just about any gun and ammo shop or flea market. Take the gun apart, wipe down the parts with a dry rag or towell, use q-tips to clean the small parts (make sure you get all of the carbon off.) Once all parts are spotless, rub down with a small amount of lubricating oil. Put back together and good as new!

Depends on the type of gun. Directions for cleaning a muzzle loader would do you little good if you have a 9mm.
