The refrigerant is blowing out of the pop-off valve most likely because you have a blockage in the system causing extremely high pressure in the high side line. This is also most likely the cause of your short cycling times due to a switch called a "high pressure cut-out switch" reacting to extreme "head pressure" on the line. The most likely place for your blockage to occur will be the expansion valve located on the side of the evaporator coil in the dash.(dash removal NOT necessary). Second most likely will be the drier.

Bro it could be several things to many to much to list I would recommend you take it to a shop "Pep Boys" is real reasonable about its rates. Freon could be low which in most cases this tends to be the reason but could also be a bad pressure switch etc etc etc .... take it to a shop.
Pep Boys does an A/C Quick check price I'm not sure I just work on them but I know it's like 30 bucks or less and it's worth the money we'll tell you whats wrong and what it will cost to fix it and if you don't want to fix it you don't have to.
Good luck.

get the escort for for 1,300 that sounds like a great deal if it runs as good as you say it does. That civic sounds like its on its last legs 159,000 is allot for any car I personally would not buy a car with that much mileage on it unless i knew every thing about it. Also 2700 sounds like allot of money for the year and mileage. That civic is only worth maybe 1,000 at best. The ford would be safer car. the civic is not as good in crashes because of how thin the metal is.
