Any books by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I particularly enjoyed Turnabout, Double Identity was great, and there's the Shadow Children Series. She's a relatively new author...none of these are "classics".
She mixes science into her books, they extremely exiting and you can't put them down! The books aren't too long, in fact they're probably not more than 200 pages, the vocabulary's is at about 9th or 10th grade level. They are great books!
Below is a link to Amazon with a list of her books.

I agree with the Harry Potter. They're really good and you'll be done with them in no time.
If not. Uhm...
I can't really tell you, because I don't really read books that are short.
The last short book I read was something in the California Diaries series by Ann M. Martin.

HARRY POTTER! Ok, maybe not good page wise, but it doesn't take long to read and they're good. I'm 19 and loves the books...give them a chance. I didn't read them in high school...but interestingly enough, we have a Harry Potter class at my college....so I read them for that!

I liked Romeo and Julliet, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Fences. They are plays, but they are really good literature.
