Ok, so i have a 2003 Kia Rio. When I'm driving I can hear a strange "swishing noise". I was scared it was my rotors making the noise. It does this noise every time the wheel does a full revolution. I took it to a guy I know and he said it was dust cups or something. Said that when they get bent, they scrape against something and thats the noise I hear. Well, he bent them back into shape, but I could still hear the noise. Now, its really loud and making me kinda nervous. Its on both sides. Someone mentioned that it could be bearings.

Can anyone help???

Well, after he bent them, it was quieter than it had been. But I could still hear it a bit. Now, its been a while, and it's super loud. If it's bearings, are they so important that it cant wait 2 weeks until I get paid? Or could my wheels fly off or something?

Most likely it's a bearing issue. Get this checked out ASAP. If you can prop up your car somehow with a jack, you can rotate the wheels to check for bearing damage. If the bearings are damaged, then the wheel you're spinning won't spin smoothly and most likely you'll hear the grinding noise.

While you're at it, you might also want to check the alignment of your car. Bearings and alignment tend to go hand in hand, the way to check this is to let go of your steering wheel for a second or two while you're on the road (with no cars around you of course.) If the car veers off to the left or right, your alignment's off as well.

Best to get your car checked at any first signs of damage, because one issue can lead to another - your car will tell you when it's not feeling well.

Good luck - and make sure you don't get ripped off at the shop.. be warned :)

Bearing issues will get louder as they continue to wear.

Your wheels won't fall off, but you'll possibly do more damage to your car. Might be ok to use it for short distance driving in the interim but I would avoid using it for out-of-town driving.

Well if he bent them and now its louder I would take it to a shop and have them check it out could be a bearing but it sounds as if he may have bent the dust cover in the wrong way .

If the caps were dented, someone that worked on it didn't do a good job.

My guess is that the bearing\spindle nuts are loose.

They should be "snug", NOT TIGHT OR LOOSE.

Jack up one of the wheels, and see if you can shake it.

Grab the top of the tire and push it in and pull on it.

If it moves. It's too loose.

Is he a certified auto technician? If not, you should have one look at it. It very well could be brake dust. The sound should not be very loud though. If the sound is loud or is getting louder and changes to a sort of scuffing noise. It is your break system, not the dust caps.
