A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Is the right to bear arms designed so that the populace can become a militia when necessary, or is it so we can, if necessary protect ourselves from a government controlled military?

If it is to protect us from the government, is it time for the left to start rethinking its’ position on gun control, while we still can.

I think I was making it farley obvious, but.

Should the left (who have been traditionally in favor of gun control) begin hording arms?

I truly hate the slogan “if we make guns illegal then only criminals will have guns.” Those who make this statement explicitly forget that the government will still have guns, and if you are making the laws, you are not a criminal, no matter who evil you are.

I’m not so much a leftist as a constitutionalist. I have always believed in the right to bear arms, like the right. But I also believe in the rest of the constitution, like the left. What has me concerned now is weather my vote will be counted by a machine owned by a corporate interest.

I am going to repeat an answer I gave on a similar question 4 weeks ago.

If the 2nd Amendment means that people have the right to rebel against their own government, then as far as I'm concerned, that was then (215 years ago) and this is now. I don't want any crazy people getting rebellious like the Confederate States and trying to wage war against our government. I do support the idea of a law-abiding individual's right to own a gun, but let's not get crazy about when and why to use them.

I believe (my opinion) that if your state legislature passes a law to ban all guns, if your Governor signs it, if the courts of your state uphold it, then you do not have a "right" to carry a gun. And if police officers come to you to confiscate your gun, and if you shoot them citing the 2nd Amendment and the Declaration of Independance as your "right" to do so, then I suspect that the Government will treat you the same way as Timothy McVeigh, and you should be.

Seriously? So let me get this straight...being a leftist, you want to outlaw guns and pretty much make them illegal. However because you have a problem with the current government, you are willing to comprimise your morals and make guns more prevelant in society? Here is a thought, if you don't like the current government, instead of violating your morals, GO VOTE! Lead a drive for votes so that the current leadership will be voted out.

The modern definition of the 2nd Amendment does not generally infer to bearing arms to protect us from government, although that was an original reason for the creation of the amendment. The generally given purpose of the 2nd amendment was to give people the right to bear arms as a matter of private self-defense of your property and your life. And last I checked, it's not necessary to have an Uzi to defend your property. A pistol can do the same thing. Therefore, it's not necessary for we on the left to start re-thinking our postion, thank you.

The right to keep and bear arms, weather or not to become a militia or to protect our family, friends or property should not be the question. The question should be weather or not we should allow our second ammendment rights to be regulated by our government, by the U.N., or by we the people.
I choose" we the people".

Its both so the populace can become a militia and to keep the govmnt in check. See how well it works out. If the govmnt has nothing to fear from its people, what keeps it in line? Anyday now we could rise up and take them out of power. Pipe dream

The Left is the side that wants the government running everything, so there is no way they will change their stance on gun control.

The 2nd amendment provides both causes, to form a militia and to protect yourselves against the government.

Its basically meant to protect yourself and Family against the enemy.

Hey all the blues I know have been saying for years that the 2nd. has nothing to do with duck hunting or home protection. It is all about stopping a rogue government.
