I think it would be better if we all learned to be more discriminating in what we watch on TV. Just say "no." Think of all the free time we would have to:
interact with our families & friends
time to read
time to exercise
time to pursue our hobbies and interests
time to volunteer for a good cause

Yes and no. Just like a lot of things, television has it good and bad points. It depends on how one uses it, it's up to the person.
And remember evil and violence already existed long before television came into being. Battles and wars had been fought by many young boy's as young as fourteen. There were even those that misused their power and those that manipulated people, and turned them against each other and their leaders. So all in all, television, is not much different then history. The only difference is, when things get ugly, you can turn it off. But back then, you couldn't run nor hide from it.

Although we own a television, we usually go DAYS without even turning it on. So in my opinion, TV has just given families another excuse NOT to spend more time together talking, knowing what's going on in each other's lives, and although it is informative, sometimes it gets a little too in-depth.
Yes, I think you are right about how it's made society less sociable too. Without a television, people may actually have the time, or take the time, to get to know who lives next door... take time to be a part of the community... LIVE and not just exist.
But I do think having a VCR or DVD player is nice cause at least you can pick and choose IF and WHEN to watch TV.

No. TV allows us to be connected with the rest of the world. It prevents our leaders from doing any damn thing they want and getting away with it. It lets us find out when things like 9/11 occur the moment it occurs. Parents need to monitor what their kids watch , it is not a babysitter. Because you are a guy, JZ, I guess you don't realize that as women we kind of appreciate it if the gyno acts like somewhat of a disinterested party . It would be a little creepy if he looked too interested. Also if a technological advance is causing our society to be less social it is the computer. Does anyone ever write a real letter to someone anymore. Everything is email. People forget how to use social etiquette b/cuz they deal with the box all day.

TV also can mean information. Just as the phone, radio, internet, etc can transmit information and news, so can the TV. The TV acts as one major component of globalization and is the only access that some countries have. The majority of violence and other useless things only appear on US TV. But yes, tv has made us less sociable and in many cases, 'dumber'. Your brain works more when you are sleeping than watching TV!

Before Television, families would gather either around the radio and listen to radio plays or music. They would also read books, magazines, or newspapers.
With tv, people still gather together and watch tv, but it doesn't stimulate the mind as much, unless you're watching an educational program.
I once turned on the vchip in my tv and tuned it to G rated content. About 99% of all tv doesn't even fall in that category, and that includes commercials, so I couldn't watch anything!

The world would be better with better television. Also more reflective and thoughtful analysis and commentary - sometimes we need a little help processing everything in a 24-hour news cycle and seeing the big picture.
And no ads!

Someways yes, some ways no. Through television, you can experience things that you might not get to in the real world. Shows that children watch ( I mean, like blue's clues and things like that) help children learn. But, t.v. might give people bad ideas that would get them into trouble, like violence and drugs.

No doubt about it. It used to be the TV was something the entire family could get together and enjoy after dinner, but there is really not anything on worth watching these days, especially for a family.
