Thanks for posting the question and for the cool videos.
In order, my preference is
a) The Troggs
b) Jimi Hendrix
c) Jim Carrey et al.
It was written by Chip Taylor of New York and went to #1 for the Troggs in the US. The Troggs version was recorded in 10 minutes as was "With a Girl Like You" Jimi Hendrix played a great version of it live as seen on the Monterey Pop video but he didn't record a studio version of it.
The LA Daily News asked Chip Taylor for his favourite version and he said "The Troggs because Reg Presley is one of the greatest early punk singers of all; Jimi Hendrix's, which was an amazing thing and true to the spirit and groove of the song; and X did one which could've been a hit if it was promoted as a single — it was just a great version." By the way, Chip Taylor is Jon Voight's brother and Angelina Jolie's uncle.
It has been a popular songs for comics to cover. As well as the Carrey version, Sam Kinison and British comedy trio the Goodies covered it. In fact, the Goodies version was the first one I heard.
