Is it still 12.2, 12.3 maybe? Will it really make a difference if we practice on 12.2 but they've got 12.4 loaded when we get to the lab?

No, it will not make a BIG difference if you're within one major release for study versus exam/lab. But if the equipment you're studying with can run 12.3 and 12.4, do it. As for your 2500 series routers, maybe configure one as a frame-relay switch to simulate a WAN between your 2600 series routers running 12.3 code. Good luck on the exam/lab.
