I used to work fast food too... another thing they ought to do is SPEAK CLEARLY
People should treat the person taking their order with the same courtesy they expect to receive...because, after all... we're the ones that prepare your food.
I used to do some pretty sick stuff to people that were rude to me. Smearing their burger with grease from the grease trap, smashing their burritos, using half a can of salt on their fries...
seriously
think about that next time you pull up to a drive thru window

firstly, its just a job, Your customers are your lively hood, so unfortunately unless they are being threatening or violent, you really cant control what they say or do. I agree with most of what you said , people are rude allot of times to clerks at stores and fast food places.. and its not nice and I dont know how people can treat others badly for no reason. You should always be curteous to those whe serve at resturants. however the part about "knowing what you want when you drive up" well , why do you have a menu there if you dont expect us to use it? I personally hate it when the drive up worker doesnt allow me to look at the menu or hurrys me.. I mean.. how do I know what I want until I look at the menu? sometimes things on the menu change, or the prices change.. shouldnt I be able to take a couple minutes to decide and to look at the menu??? well other than that part, I agree with you, but I also know that no matter where you work, in retail or fast food , or anywhere you work with the public you are going to run into some a** holes along the way, just try not to let it ruin your day or change your attitude , the best thing you can do is to continue to treat them kinda and curtious and be an example to them! good luck

Okay, I agree with you with regards to the cell phone thing. That's a rule that should be followed when in the grocery store or anywhere else, too. And, yes, radios and loud engine noises should be turned down to a minimum if possible.
However, with regards to waiting to decide what to order...sometimes a customer is not familiar with the menu and that's really only available at the point where you place the order. (You'd feel like they were really stupid if you worked at Burger King and they ordered a Big Mac.) Sometimes you have 3 or 4 or more people in a vehicle and they all want different things and they're trying to tell the driver (the person placing the order)...that can take a little time, too.

You're right, that as a customer of a drive through, we should be courteous, we should be focused and we should be considerate in terms of noise to the person who is taking the order. Of course, having your order already in mind is helpful since there will be a backlog of customers behind you.
Now, as someone who has been on both sides of the fence, let me share from personal experience. First from the customer service side - if you are talking on the phone, you are holding up the person taking your order and it becomes confusing to decipher the talking from the order. Those speakers are not terribly clear all the time and anything that you can do to eliminate background noise will make accuracy of order better.
Now from the other side of the coin: as the customer,
having the order ready as soon as I drive up can sometimes be a challenge. First, if it is a restaurant that I haven't been to in a while, I sometimes need that extra minute or two to try to get my order together as well as everyone else in the car. Since the menus don't often appear in sight until we are right at the place of ordering, this can be challenging to have the order ready immediately. It's one of my pet peeves. A better design for drive throughs would be to have the menu sign in view before you turn into the place of ordering. That way, you have the ability to get your order together before you actually pull up and hear, "May I take your order?"
Good luck dealing with all those difficult customers. Maybe you can make it into a game - see how many customers you can make smile when they pull into the window.

I work at a fast food restaurant in CA. Most of my customers are idiots. They come everyday, and I have to baby sit them like a five year old. No the chicken Taquito does not have beef, it has has chicken, that's why it is called a chicken Taquito. I have spit in drinks. I also spit in the salsa cups before I give them to the customers. Basically I hate fast food restaurants. Their just places for Americans to get more obese. I hate when they ask me for Italian Sauce, which Italian Dressing. Read the menu idiots. If you come a least twice a week, which most of my customers do, then learn the menu. It should not take two minutes to decide what you want for side orders. If your broke, stay home.

I agree with everything that you've said, however, there should also be rules for the idiots who are working in the drive-thru window!
#1. Don't mumble when you answer the call! Speak clearly into your headset. We can't understand you half of the time!
#2. Pay attention! Try to get our order right so that we don't have to repeat it 5 times!
#3. When we get to the drive-up window, actually check our order BEFORE handing it to us! Make sure that there are napkins, silverware (if needed) and straws! There is nothing worse than getting away from the window only to find our order is messed up!

Well in general I think you should follow those rules, but I don't know about when you know what you want before you get to the window. . . .What if you've never been at that place before, and so you need to see the menu? A lot of places don't have the menu anywhere you can see until you're right there when you're supposed to order. . . .But the rest I agree with. I hate people who are on the phone at the same time!!!

Nobody likes waiting in line. the drive-Thru is supposed to be a time saving alternative for those on the go. Not being prepared, will hold up the line, Generally the customers waiting are going to blame the staff of the establishment for the hold up, thus being rude or unreasonable.

I ALWAYS say please and thank you and get treated ALOT better that people I have been riding with when they order and act rude. Being polite doesn't take any more time that being rude. I guess I don't understand why people feel that it is necessary to be jerks. I suppose that they feel that those working at a fast food restaurant are beneath them. All I have to say is thank God they are actually working and not sitting on their a**es collecting welfare!

Dude, I try to be polite to the workers at fast food places because I know what it's like to work for a living. I smile and say thank you because the people behind the counter are doing a favor for you. I hate it when a person spends so long ordering and you hafta wait behind them.

The best reason is to treat others as you would wish they would treat you and you will earn the good karma of the fast food workers.
I once saw someone get punched out for using his cell phone during Star Wars. I applauded the guy that hit him.
