Dig deeper. If we indeed must rethink our addictions, automobile is only one of them, and far from the most important. In an economy where transportation is expensive because of high fuel cost, people must live closer to work. Thus, one of the most important addictions to rethink is the addiction to a single-family home in suburbs; with high fuel costs, the 'burbs are viable only for retirees who don't have to go to work every morning. The working population will have to shift back into the cities and live in high-rise apartment buildings or condominiums.

I will take public transport or bike to work if the cost of taking the public transport is lower than the cost of driving.
I live in Singapore and I drive to work everyday. From the petrol cost, it cost me less than $6 a day to drive to and back from work. If I take a bus to the MRT and took the train to the station and take a bus again to my exact work place, I will spend more than $6. Thus, it's not justified to change to public transport.
In addition, the public transport companies in Singapore are raising their fares every year. The cost of taking public transport will be increasing.
However, from the environmental point of view, it is bad for the environment if we burn petrol instead of taking the train which uses electricity.
I hope that hydrogen cars can be mass produced soon.

I love driving my car to death, but I am living in boston for the summer and am loving not having to pay a dime for gas! Prices are so rediculous, I don't know how anyone can afford to fill up their tanks anymore, especially the people who still own SUV's.

I started taking the train regularly when it was around $2.75 or so. I get to work in a better mood, too. The only drawback is pain in the a** teenagers and cell phone assholes.
