Possums can be fairly aggressive if they feel threatened. If it's really showing the teeth, could it be a wolverine? They are pretty vicious and afraid of nothing. The link below has the picture.

Of course, any mammal acts out of character if it's sick--I'm thinking of rabies. You may want to call animal control before you venture outside much.

Without knowing more about the critter or where you live it would be hard to say. Around here the only 'possum like' animal is a possum. And they can get pretty nasty - they hiss if they feel threatened, and may bite even if they're not rabid.

It could be a opossum with rabies. You need to contact your animal control officer a.s.a.p. before the animal attacks someone.

Could be an opossum, they are aggressive as a defense. Also it could be a small rat if you are in NYC.
