I have read that if you get your ears pierced, you can get scars or something called keloids, that can get as big as oranges?!? What is that about?? :|

I have had my ears pierced a total of 7 times (6 lobal, 1 helix cartiliage), and have yet to have any keloid formation. Keloids were described to me like a mother-of-pearl within an oyster: a bit of scarred tissue, or broken cartiliage grows more scars around it, leaving small hard lumps under the skin, and if they begin to form, gentle massaging on a daily basis usually corrects the problem (part of my daily routine with my helix piercing as I wear over-the-ear headphones).

However, anything the size of an orange should have been taken care of LOOONG before it got to that size. Anything that big is well beyond mere "keloid" status... that's "keloid plus long-ignored-infection plus lack-of-care". Anything that's beyond a small amount of swelling the first few days is a serious problem that needs to be seen by a professional (first, the piercer for immediate home-care advice, and second, if that doesn't work, a doctor, for lancing, surgery, antibiotics, or other treatments).

The only way you could get anything remotely the size of an orange on your ear is, well, by stretching the lobe, and actually putting an orange in the hole. ^_~

Keloids are NOT an infection!Darker skins are more prone to scarring when cut, scraped,or burned.Keloids form over the original scar instead of the original scar healing.Doctors don't know why. They think it's the skin's over-reaction to injury,an over-healing effect.Keloids usually first appear in people in adolescence, around thirteen to fourteen years of age,but ages vary.If someone in your family has keloids,it's not a good idea to get piercings or tattoos.Plastic surgery, liposuction should be avoided.Mandatory surgery requires that the surgeon know about the tendency to form keloids before surgery.Only dermatologists can help lessen the appearance of keloids with laser surgery and steroid medications, and even radiation treatments. But these are not always effective.Scarring often is lessened to a degree, but remains.
Don't pay any attention to suggestions to get piercings anyway;if you have a genetic tendency to form keloids you will be very sorry that you did.Keloids are very painful and disfiguring and often permanent lesions.Get the book that is listed as source material;it thoroughly explains this condition.

I have a total of 6 piercings and I only had a keloid problem with my last one. I found out after i got it pierced that for piercings where there is a lot of cartlidge, like the top of your ears, you can't get them pierced with a piercing gun because it can shatter the cartlidge. It looks really ugly but it's definatly not as big as an orange but i'd rather not have a scar. As long as the person doing the piercing uses a needle and you clean it properly you shouldnt have any problems.

its an infection and keloids are not the size of oranges they are simply tougher scar tissue and slightly raised. If your prone to keloids you run less of a risk of your holes closing up after your done with the initial healing but gauging is more painful. If you get a thing the size of an orange or any size for that matter it is infected tissue usually from low quality or nonsterile jelwery.
