...but I saw a single thread of spider's web spanning a distance of over eight feet (2.5 m) - inside a church, no wind. How did that happen?

In such a case, the spider walks the long way, say ceiling -> floor -> up the wall -> back to ceiling. While doing so, a spider can also shorten its thead again, by literally eating it.

They still use the wind..even though you can't feel it doesnt mean it isnt there...when you open doors it lets wind open so the spiders web is carried untill it hits something. Also it can crawl across the floor or any suface to attach the web
