Some animals, especially a lot of animals in zoos now, have been raised in captivity. They wouldn't have the skills needed to survive in the wild, since they never had the experience of having to find their own food or evade predators. Also, some zoos have animals in captivity that can no longer be found in the wild. Probably a better idea to leave them in there. Most zoos are committed to keeping the animals happy and healthy, and do their best to mimic the animal's natural environment.

Go right ahead.
Lets start with the parrots. Let them go to feed the hawks, cats, and dogs when they can't find the proper nutrition to sustain them. Or we can let them freeze. I've seen this sort of this happen too many times in my life as a bird trainer and raiser.
But say you want to let them go in the wild. Take them from tehir warm, cushy aviary and put them in the wild. S/he is going to ahve to make it for the night--but s/he is unfamiliar with the territory, so an owl gets her. Or maybe she does, and finds a flock, but the heirarchy is set and she gets torn to pieces before being chased off. So there goes all the good feeding places.
And there is a cat! Is a cat bad? She has never seen a cat. Or a hawk. Or a car. She doesn't know that this plant is poisonous and she gets really ill when she chews on it.
Wow, you are so swell to want to set these zoo animals free.
Maybe it's not the best life for an animal. But with adequate care and attention, they can live productive lievs, educate children, bring elight to all lives, and possibe save their species from us pesky humans who want wood for our deluxe condos and land for our nutrient-depleting cotton.

Are they happy...? Who knows. Ah, but are they safe? Yes.
Sometimes I think it would have been better if we had put ourselves in zoo cages, and left the world to the animals.
...But, only sometimes!

If you mean to include people in the list of animals, then I say the answer is yes. I think it would be funny if you could walk along and feed the humans. Picture if you were in a cage and the 300th person in a row tried to feed you a candy bar. You would sick of f**king candy bars and wouldn't want any more, and you'd throw it out of the cage. That would be pretty funny to watch, wouldn't it?
But honestly no. Zoos are basically just prisons. Who would want to live in a cage to be looked at all day? I would hate it. Animals should only be locked up for the same reasons humans are locked up.
Which leads to an interesting point - why do humans get a fair trial when they kill somebody and animals don't?
Why don't people try to defend plants like they defend animals?
