You're talking apples and oranges here.

A collection of short stories bearing a common theme is called an anthology. A novel is one continual plot containing approximately 30,000 to 100,000 words having dividing chapters. Short stories usually are divided into parts and not necessarily chapters.

Usually, seven short stories of moderate length could be used in an anthology, but there is no set limit to them. This collection is not termed a novel.

To publish a collection of short stories you must first publish several of the stories in literary journals or other publications, unless you are a famous author. If you go to a bookstore and look at the copyright page of any short story collection you will see that this is the case.

I've seen it go as high as 300 once.

60 is the the usual norm. Sometimes 40. Depends on the book though.

But I'm breaking 136 chapters right now with mine, so I'll let you know when I'm finished.
