It really depends on the school and the seriousness of its soccer program. I played field hockey in HS, and made the JV as a freshman because I was tall for my age, but also because my skills were really good because I went to Hockey Camp in the summer. Summer Soccer Camp will help to improve your skills, especially if your schools program is not that competitive. It's a bit late for soccer camp this year, so getting as much practice, and working to improve your deficiencieswill help. If you are not sure what your deficiencies are, ask one of your previous coaches. Most kids league coaches shy away from critiqing players, but will if asked.
Good luck. HS sports are much more competitive, but much more fun, too.

I play JV soccer as well. I just did my best at tryouts. I had a chance to play at Varsity level, but I would have sat on the bench for most of the games so I decided that being a starter on JV was better than watching on the bench.

Depends on your ability, the school's success in their program, and where your school is. In some areas (California, Illinois, Oregon) soccer is really competitive and the schools require quite a bit of experience in order to make the tougher teams. What a lot of coaches look for in a player is about: 15% fitness, 35% skill/understanding of mental game, and 50% attitude. A positive attitude that contributes to solid team chemistry always helps a lot!

i'll be a freshman too and as i'm going into tryouts all i can think of is i know my ability and i know my strengths and weaknesses...dont be afraid of having a bit of ********* in your stronger areas but make sure your still a team player and when your doing a drill that isnt your easiest area all you can do is your best, show confidence, show enthusiasm, show no weakness, show teamwork, and cheer your teammates on when they might be having trouble doing something or help them out-coaches love this and remember to always look your coach in the eye when they are speaking it shows respect to them and they look for someone who they know respects them and will be willing to do anything they say on the field...you'll do fine just relax and good luck!
