If it's a hotdog, drink or a small snack then no. However, if you are walking and carrying a salad then people will notice you.
I guess it's only rude if you don't wash your hands then you touch the door handle and people see it because they think it's unsanitary. I was in a bus in san francisco once and got grossed out watching a guy eat and wipe his mouth then touch the railing that I needed to hold onto.

As in the street? while walking or along the street? Its not rude. . . but others would easy unethical. . . As for me, if I want to eat something. . . i care less. . . for ethics, as long as i dont offend anyone. . . or littering. If I'm hungry enough and I'm sort of hurrying have not finished my snacks, I take it with me and eat it while crossing the street or walking. What about the streets besides plazas, with benches to sit upon. . to rest. . . . they're are put up. . .for us to sit on. . . so. . . it can be equated as eating in the street and its not rude. Freedom of choice.. . . so long as you are responsible enough to observe the do's and donts. . . of littering.

It was at one time but since street cafe's and the like no one seem to care any more, I don't eat in the street but that's a safety issue, you should always watch where you're going.

No, it isn't, but in certain countries, and this may include the US, I am not sure, it is "behavior unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman" and can get you court-martialled, particularly if you are eating in the street while wearing your uniform.

Supposedly not but I myself don't like eating in public, besides in a restaurant, of course and even then I would prefer a prive room if one was available. It's embarrassing for me. Just one of those things...

In "polite society" it has always be a no-no to walk & eat when you are outside of your home or in a sidewalk Cafe! In today's world, you just gotta do what you gotta do, when you gotta do it!
