Well, I am a huge Star Wars fan, but I'll also be the first to admit that those six movies aren't the greatest ever made. That said, I'd have to say some of the truly best movies ever made would have to be (in not particular order):

The Shawshank Redemption
The Godfather
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Saving Private Ryan
American Splendor
Braveheart
A Bronx Tale
Jaws
Crash
Good Fellas
The Lord of the Rings (all 3)
The Pianist
Pulp Fiction
Schindler's List
The Wizard of Oz
Toy Story
The Incredibles
Monsters Inc.
Finding Nemo

...just to name a few...

Without question.
Lord of the Rings, Return of the King.

No one thought the book could be made into a movie. New Line Cinema basically bet the ranch and the future of their studio that a fairly obscure director Peter Jackson could do it. They spent $300 Million and 7 years in pre and post production to make the trilogy with no real "name" star as a draw.
Return of the King won 11 Academy Awards - every one it was nominated for. This ties it with Ben Hur and Titanic as the most honored film in history - and it didn't get one acting nomination
(which I think was a joke) otherwise it would be #1.
It's a beautifully filmed movie and if some feel it's too long, well, they're probably not fans of the book and that's ok. But the themes of courage in the face of overwhelming odds and friendship are timeless.
The Lord of the Rings was ranked as one of the greatest novels of the 20th Century. Certainly, the movies based on the novel rank in filmdom's highest echelon. And Return of the King rules them all.

Most answers in this question sucked...

Only the last guy who provided a list is on a good path..

One of the best movies ever has been The Shawshank Redemption... Excellent story, amazing actors, incredible description of the different situations and one of the best endings ever...

This movie is the type of movie you show to a friend you appreciate.. At least it got me thinking about a lot of things that matter in life other than money, girils and partying...

A masterpiece
