Because as far as racist jokes go, its just not funny after a certain point. I mean everyone keeps telling more and more and more and just expect you to eat it up because your friends or something. But now days more of these racial issues and other issues are very present and everyone knows they aren't being dealt with the best that they can be. So I don't see any reason why not to be sensitive about this stuff. If the issue is small I don't get bent out of shape. But if you are directly saying things to get a response you will definitely get one. I'm sure you haven't thought every last black joke was funny, I mean you may have laughed it off at the time but I'm quite sure some of the time you wished you would have decked the guy for saying something like that. Bottom line think about what is really important to you and how far you are willing to let someone drag it through the mud.

And just WHAT do you mean by "sensitive" may I ask?!? ;)

What?!? A racist joke? Oh that's different, now that definitely deserves a Rodney King-sized butt whippin!!! And Cocoa Puffs are part of a complete breakfast... Don't be talking about them that way... And it's "cuckoo" not "coco." The cartoon is a damn cuckoo bird, not a Gorilla raised by a white girl, you fool! ;)

As a society we:
1. lack emotional maturity
2. lack social expectations that others will demonstrate emotional maturity and restraint (even if they don't have it)
3. lack an outlet for civil social discourse - and there is no longer any EXPECTATION in our society that discussion of controversial issues will remain civil - we are Jerry Springer all the way!
4. lack subtlety - we don't appreciate nuance: "you're either with me or against me" things are "good or evil" we have lost our gray areas and have no patience for messy in-betweens.
5. think that the fact that we feel a particular way should be rewarded with an affirmation in the form of legislation. This is a corollary to #1 - there seem to be millions of people who don't get that fact of their emotion-of-the-moment does not obligate anyone to anything.

Maybe they have been put down or made fun of so much that an innocent remark is taken the wrong way. Or they could be someone that wants to find prejudice or rudeness where there isn't any.

This comes from a couple of generations of "feel good" parenting.
Li'l Johnny doesn't get a spanking anymore, that's abuse, and we have to make sure he gets everything that makes him happy or he'll make a scene or get his feelings hurt.

What did society think was going to happen ... utopia?
You've got people in their teens and 20's walking around boohooing that they're not getting their way and how much it sucks.

Most people that I meet today have such an enlarged sense of 'self' that they have egos a mile wide sitting like a halo around them.

Get within shouting distance, and you've bruised it.

Sensitive? What makes you think I am freaking sensitive? Did I say something wrong? Let me check to see if I put on a belt. Hmmm... Let me see if I remembered to put on pants.

(Shrug) you got me. The whole Politically Correct thing is silly.

Most don't want to take the time to get to know you anymore. They are too important and have no time for triviality, or being rude and insensitive is easier than being polite.
