Good luck ... because not having a hotel room in August for a trip in September could be a little risky in Venice, if you have to look on your budget...
Have fun... and greet the San Marks square from me ...

Hi, I just read an article about a traveler working for the NY Times, traveling on a budget and he was in Venice a few weeks back. He had a pretty funny story. I'll try to find the link for you.
Happy travels!

A couple of years ago I stayed on the Lido, in a Best Western hotel, and it was very nice, and cost a little more than $100 for a double room, with a really nice bathroom, and a balconey. Breakfast was included too. The name was Best Western--Biasutti Hotel. They even have acess to the beach! You have to take a water taxi back to the main island, but it's worth it.

when i went to venice, i stayed in a great hotel called the 'casanova' on the island next to venice called the 'lido'... it wasn't expensive, the people were nice there and there was an excellent breakfast buffet every morning! the lido isn't far from the rest of venice, the 'vaporettos' (venice boats) comme every few minutes and you're at the st marcus square in 5 minutes! enjoy your stay!

Last month I visited Venezia, Italy. I stayed in Villa Gabriella. I found here very testy foods and excellent accommodation in comparatively low rate. I am very pleased in their services.

I don't know if it's the "best" place to stay, but I have stayed at Hotel Calderan/Casa Gerotto twice, in 2000 and 2006. It is close to the train station, so you don't have to lug your bags very far, inexpensive (esp. for Venetian standards), and the staff is very friendly. They have both dorm beds and private rooms, and clean bathrooms.
Buon viaggio!
