I had the privilage of being a young LFC fan in the 1980's and we always seemed to go to Wembley. In my life time, my dad took me to Wembley every year from 1982 - 1989. Face it, we were always there. We'd won the league a good few times in this period as well.
Watching the Mancs n the 1990's replace us as the team to beat who were now winning the league all the time and winning cups was painful. Our biggest rivals from outside the city had now become the team that everyone feared. It was painful. Watching them win the treble in the year I was 21 was horrific. I can clearly remember supporting Bayern Munichin the European Cup Final because the hate we have for the Mancs coupled with the fact they may do a unique treble that may never be done again, wa just inbearable for most Scousers to think. They were amazing in the 1990's.
I was always going to say LFC were the better team but it is a tough call. You can't deny the Mancs on their day were the best in the 1990's. Even on their off days they were probably the best. In the 80's however, LFC rarely had our off days and the trophies we stacked up proved it. Here's the facts though trophy wise...
Liverpool FC 1980's Trophy Haul Seaons 80/81 - 89/1990)
League Champions = 7 times (1980,1982,1983,1984,1986,1988,1990)
FA Cup Winners = 2 (1986, 1989)
European Cup Winners = 2 (1981, 1984)
League Cup Winners = 4 (1981,1982,1983,1984)
LFC also lost three final in this time: European Cup 1985, FA Cup 1988 and League Cup 1987. We also lost 5 semi finals and finished runner-s up in the league twice.
Man Utd Trophy Haul in the 1990's (seasons 90/91 - 99/2000)
League Champions = 6 (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000)
FA Cup Winners = 4 (1990, 1994, 1996, 1999)
European Cup Winners = 1 (1999)
League Cup Winners = 1 (1992)
European Cup Winner Cup = 1 (1991)
I could be wrong here but I can only rememberMan Utd losing 2 finals in the 1990's FA Cup Final (1995) and the League Cup Final (1994)
Two great records, but LFC's is superior. Fact.

Comparing the 80's and 90's - Liverpool won more trophies including more titles, european cups and league cups. Man U won more FA cups and the Cup Winners Cup which Liverpool never won. Man U's treble in 99 was an awesome and historic achievement but if you look at history as a whole LFC have won TWO trebles (84 and 01). Also consider the amount of foreign players in the 90's compared to the 80's. Liverpool win but the Mancs come a close second compared to Arsenal and Abramovich FC.

Although I wasn't alive at the time of the reign of Merseyside in the 80's, I believe that the Liverpool team then was better than the 90's Man U team.
