A mercy rule is a rule in any game or sport that states when one team is beating another by a certain set amount of points/runs/goals, even before the regulation amount of time has expired, then the game is over.
Most frequently this rule is seen in the 10-run limit of the Little Leagues: if a team coming to bat is up by ten runs or more, the game is called.
Currently, no professional leagues have any sort of mercy rule. This has sometimes led to some lopsided scores.

No such thing as a mercy rule in the NFL. It only exist in Pop Warner or Pee Wee football, because if a team is getting beat by 30 or 40 points the kids on the loosing team usually start to cry and they pretty much give up. So the referee's just go ahead and stop the game.

When the Pats play away games, everyone goes home anyways at the half. So what's the difference. Not a Pats fan but I don't like to see fans leaving before games are over. It is something that really pisses me off. When SD played them I watched the whole game......and didn't cry about it later. They were obviously the better team. We'll get our revenge:)

No. But it's considered poor sportsmanship to run up the score. If you're up by a lot of points, you're supposed to either run the ball a lot (taking up time) or have your second-string guys in there.

Nope.
But a team doesn't want to totally crush another team, because someday they will play again.

Hell no! There is no mercy in football. if you can't take a beating every now and then, you don't belong in football.
