A bass guitar is easy to recognise because it usually has a longer neck than a guitar and has usually four thick strings (sometimes five and fewer yet have six) where as a guitar has from six to twelve strings ranging from very thin to thick. The bodies are sometimes larger and thicker on a bass as well.
My ex played bass. He had a really beautiful old 56, maple neck fender precision and a Rickenbacker ( really long neck) and I had an old Hofner (beatle) bass.

The standard guitar has 6 strings, E A D G B E, low to high. The twelve string is the same, but with doubled strings. The standard bass is an octave lower, with 4 strings, tuned E A D G B E. However, the 5 string bass seems now to be the new standard, B E A D G.
The 8 string bass is a standard 4 string with doubled octave strings. The 10 string is the same, but based on the 5 string.
There is a 6 string bass, featured on Aerosmith's "Back in the Saddle," played by Joe Perry. I don't know the tuning, I suspect that it is a four string with a couple of doubled strings.
In addition, Doug Pinnick of King's X plays a 12 string bass, and a 15 string bass, being a 4 string and 5 string bass with TRIPLED strings, respectively. He said in an interview that he was aware of an 18 string bass (a 6 string with tripled strings), but he decided that was a bit much and decided (at that writing) not to look into it.

The bass guitar has four low-end strings that provide the fundamental beat and tempo for a band--besides the drums. They are in tonal match with the top larger guitar strings of E, A, D, and G, but are tuned a full octave below.
Guitars are traditionally a six-string instrument, but now there are seven-stringers along with the rhythmic 12-string guitars and other variations.
Conversely, one of the members in a Mexican Mariachi band plays a bass-type six-string guitar having a box size considerably larger than the traditional dreadnought.

The guitar usually has six strings, but guitars with seven, eight, ten 12, and 18 strings are also found.
A bass is similar in appearance to an guitar but has a larger body, a longer neck and scale length, and, usually, four strings (but sometimes five or more).
