According to statistics published by the APA, about 1% of the population has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). It's not known for sure what causes it, but certainly it is not due only to environment. Psychotherapy isn't very successful in changing them. They can be very intelligent and charismatic at first, but most of their friendships and relationships usually turn sour before long.
One thing to remember is that personality disorders exist on a continuum and we all exhibit a little narcissism at times. Someone with NPD shows a long term and pervasive pattern of such behavior which goes far beyond the average. They are striking in their insistence that they should always be treated with deference but not at all interested in returning the favor. They will sometimes admit candidly that they have no interest in being fair to anyone. Chilling, but true, and 1 out of 100 people have this!
The best way to deal with one is not to. But if you must deal with them, try calmly asking them questions in a true spirit of curiosity about how they see things. You'll find it very interesting and will be less likely to feel exasperated and caught in their games.

First of all, most disorders today are evaluated on a biopsychosocial model. It's not necessarily accurate to say that anyone is "born" with a personality disorder. That having been said, NPD involves inflated self-worth. Kind of. People will feel that all of their accomplishments are a HUGE deal, whereas the same accomplishments by other people really aren't. When this view is challenged in any way, the person may become very distressed / angry / depressed: "the narcissistic wound". The type of arrogance (for lack of a better word) involved means they're probably not above manipulating those around them.

It is self deception as a method of avoiding the sensation of fear. The narcissist is so habitually practised in acts of self admiration and self confidence they literally CAN NOT focus on anything else but self appearance and speech. Such people talking about themselves can put their listeners to sleep; they can say volumes in quantity and zero in meaning nor love; too much fear.
Someone else mentioned the parable from which the name is taken. He, Narcissus falls in and drowns. Perhaps that's retrosymbolic for awarness or attention loss or deficit or hypnotic episode. To be bored to a hypnotic state with repetitive compliments and praises from parents and others. That hypothesis fits quite well. If that is true then they are probably masochists looking for abuse, criticism or the like. You are likely to find narcissists with sadists.

sure, I do. that's a character sickness the place each and every person is very narcissistic. they do no longer care approximately every physique yet themselves and become bored in issues that have no longer something to do with them. they're self based, yet whilst they're in "love" they understand the thank you to charm somebody to flow out with them, and then whilst the relationship gets to a undeniable think approximately which their ego is gratified and that they no longer decide for the corporation, they go away or ruin up with the guy. Narcissitic human beings won't in any respect comprehend that they have got this sickness on their very own, with the aid of fact they think of they're such staggering human beings. often the sickness occurs between people who're victims of abuse that reasons low self-properly worth so the Narcissism is rather an overcompensation for low self-properly worth, and narcissists have a low opinion of themselves devoid of understanding it.

yea, it's not really a genetic disorder. It's more likely formed from the way a child grew up in their surroundings. Usually REALLY spoiled people develop this disorder and think they're the hottest and greatest thing on this planet.

Narcissus is a fabled boy who was quiet handsome, he was a beautiful boy. He often watched his reflection in a pool and admired himself so much that one day he fell in and drowned.
This was the story, when people are so self absorbed this is classified as a narcissistic personality.

well Narcissus was so full of himself>> really really inlove with himself ... so people who are narcissistic are those who adore themselves too much that they think they are the best , the most attractive and that the world revolves around them

It can be acquired-- you're not neccesarily born with it.
