I've had sex, but I wouldn't be going on the pill for that (well I guess I would, but I'm planning on waiting for a long time before having sex again.) Anyway, my mom's a huge believer of the pill...regulates, acne-wise, etc. But I know I have to go for a physical before hand, which involves a pap smear. Would the doctor realize that I'm sexually active? I don't mind my parents finding out... but I'd rather avoid telling if I can...

Just tell your mom that you'd prefer to be alone in the exam room. Anything that goes on between you and the doctor is confidential. If she balks, tell her that you feel awkward enough having a pelvic exam at all, much less having one in front of your mother. Your doctor won't reveal anything to your mom that isn't related to your actual health, and even then s/he may have you relay that sort of information.

OMG most of these answers are wrong! Your doctor **CANNOT** tell if you've had sex by doing a pap. That is a load of crap!! However, a "skin test" can be done to see if you have had sex.. and it has to be within a certain time frame. But not too many people have these done. Becuase what happenes when your sexually active is you shed more skin then you would doing normal things like showering or sports, which you shed skin doing too, but not the same amount.

You may hear alot of people say "If you had sex your hymen is broken and the doctor can see that". This is untrue. Why? Becuase alot of females lose their hymen when they're young. It can be broken by things such as horseback riding or gymnastics. So even if the doctor noticed this, he/she would not make the assumption that your having sex.

But, if you go for a pap, you doctor will ask you if your sexually active. Which you should be honest and tell her you are. Chances are once she knows this shes going to want to put you on the pill. But the pill is good. It has alot of plus's. The side effects are minor if you even get any. I've been on the pill Marvelon for 4 years now and I've never once experienced a side effect. Same for a few friends of mine. And the doctor is NOT allowed to give out information to your parents. Its illegal. So I woulnd't worry about that.

In my opinion, becuase you've had sex before.. even though you say you'd like to wait a long time before doing it again... you should probably go on the pill just in case. But on the other hand if you don't want to be on the pill thats your decision and your mother should respect that.

Best of luck!

Your doctor will not be able to tell if you are sexually active or not, UNLESS you have sex within a week of your PAP. He could pick up sperm on swabbing your vagina. Your mom being a big believer in the pill is not a good reason for going on them. There are a lot of unpleasant side effects, and it permanently increases your risk for certain cancers. If you aren't sexually active, and your doctor is not recommending it for regulation of your cycle, there is no reason to be on the pill. Good luck!

The doctor will have you fill out a info sheet, telling about family history, personal history, sexual activity, etc... So if you're honest, your doctor will know.

There is no real way to tell if a girl is virgin through an exam, unless the girl is at a really young age. The majority of older girls break their hymen before sex. By using tampons, riding horses, bikes, exercise, etc...

It doesn't matter if your doctors know if you are sexually active or not. Your doctor cannot breach the patient confidentiality. It is illegal to do so.

You don't have to tell your parents. Your mom shouldn't be in the room with you during the exam if you don't want her to be. Anything you tell the doctor about your history is private. Think about trying Depo Provera or something that you don't have to remember to take every day. Much simpler.

If your Hymen is not present it is a sign of being sexually active--however a tampon and excercise can do the same thing....

your doctor does not have the right to tell your mother if you are sexually active - you are the patient, it is patient/doctor confidentiality - don't worry.
