I installed a cd-rom on my computer and went through all the steps to install it. However, when I click on the icon to begin the program, it says:

[1058]: The sound decompression software has not been installed properly. Please run Setup and try again. This program will now terminate.

I have read the entire read me files and can not seem to find the problem. Under the system requirements it says I need a 8-bit sound card. How do I know if I have a sound card??? The computer is about a year old, its a dell.....................Thanks... !!!!!!!!!!!!

Its not detecting a sound card in the system. Since its only a year old, it would have a sound card. Why are you replacing the cd-rom? Was it lightning or just a burn out? You can go into your control panel, then click on system, hardware, then device manager. Find where it says sound, then click the minus sign next to that. See if there is a sound card listed. If there is it may have a yellow exclamation point beside it. Double click on the sound cards name and click on troubleshoot. If its not listed, your computer is not picking it up. Could be a bad soundcard if you recently had lightning strike. Try rebooting the computer and see if you get the same error. The sound card can be found on the system unit (the tower with the power button on it). Look on the back, where you plug everything into like your dsl, phone, speakers, etc. The sound card is where you plug your speakers into and also usually has a microphone plug-in. Turn off computer, unplug, take off case again (alwasy be sure to hold onto metal on case with one hand while working around with other hand or else you will transmit static and could possibly ruin something just by touching it. By always holding on to the case, you are grounding yourself) Look at the back again to find the right card, then remove it..pull it straight out from the board and replace it. Put back together and reboot. Did you connect all ribbon cables back to the cd-rom when you re-installed it? The sound card could have gotten pulled from its seat a bit therefore not getting a good connection when you were working in there.

Well being in mens health- Dont worry it wont kill you, this CD-rom might put you through alot of pain but it wont kill you. lol looks like you might have a conflict with the CD-rom and your sound card try re-installing the sound card software. Other questions arise also- can you still get sound out of the computer and does the CD drive even read a disc -not being music?
