if it is coming from your hot water side then you need to drain your hot water heater do this about 3 times and it should clear it up. make sure you put a hose on the bottom bib of the hot water heater so you can drain it outside or to keep it far away remember it will be HOT! if it is in your cold water run the cold side while you clean out the hot water heater. also go to plumbing supply store and tell them what you have done see if they have anymore preventive maintenance steps.

If it's hot & cold water, it could be the tap, the pipes or the well. Check the easy things first, the ones you can see. If it's only the hot water, it might be the hot water heater. Did you know you're supposed to empty it through the tap at the base once a year? Most people don't; I didn't until I had a problem. Sediment builds up in there over time, and if you attach a hose to the base and let 'er rip, you get to see all the wonderful stuff that comes out. Maybe you should do this anyway.
Getting a water test is a good idea; you never know.

A house in the country (especially an old one) probably has galvanized pipes. The saline that the water softener puts into the water can speed up the corrosion in the old pipes. Usually this brown water clears after a minute. It's fine to use it for bathing but I would consider bringing bottled water for drinking.
The only thing you can do to fix it is replace all the pipes in the house.

It could be that you have rust and/or iron in your water. The egg smell is from sulphur which can cause this as well. This WILL eventually discolor your whites and dishes. I suggest contacting the dealer you purchased your softener system from and ask about a chlorinator.

You might have sedement in the hot water heater. You might try draining it. If you are on a well system - you might want to raise the foot valve on your pump

Rusty pipes. Maybe Iron. Have the damn water tested for purity, especially if it's well water.
