Okay parents out there. I have to know. Why do some of you feel it is nessecary to buy your young children a cell phone? It looks like when they are born, they get a rattle in one hand and a cell phone in another. Is it just a matter of "keeping up with the Jones' "? We, as parent should KNOW who our children are calling!!

I completely agree. Not only that, but there are a lot of other issues as well. For instance, there is a potential connection between cell phones and brain tumors. Johnnie Cochrane's family is looking into that possible connection as the cause of his death.

Also, as a high school teacher I can tell you that they are totally being used inappropriately at school, for everything from drug deals, to uploading and downloading porn, to cheating in class. Plus they ring during class, disrupting the whole show. Grrrrrr.

Our school is among the poorest in California, yet most of the kids have cell phones, even when the families are barely surviving on welfare. I can't figure out how they do it. However, I do know that towards the end of the month, the families seem to be running out of food before they run out of cell minutes.

I have 3 sons. 20, 17, & 15.

The 2 oldest boys got cell phones on their sixteenth birthdays, because I knew they'd be out on the roads alone in a car.

The youngest doesn't have one, and won't, until he turns 16 and becomes a driver.

Too many parents do buy cell phones for kids. But I guess they think it's the only way to keep track of where they are. And I suppose the kids pressure the parents because they want to be trendy.

I don't think a young child needs a cell phone and that probably is "keeping up with the Jones." Parents need to know who their children are calling, yes, but I feel that raising children with care and that instilling in them good moral character and honor will hopefully eliminate their need to call a person that they should not be calling in the first place. Be part of your children's' lives and they will live by example (a good one of course).

i see them younger and younger with cell phones if parents say its to keep up with them then they should buy them a cheap phone that dials only one number i think its called a bug but if the parent feels it is necessary for the chilkd to have one then they have the right to give them one and they can see who there child is calling by dialing the numbers on the cell phone bill hello people have been doing that for years

Not wishing to spoil the party, but I have an idea that all this cell phone and wireless stuff coming out now is going to end up causing an epidemic of brain cancer.

I agree, kids don't need cell phones unless maybe they're old enough to drive. Parents should know where their kids are anyway without having cell phones.
