Personally I recommend soda and vinegar, followed by plunger. It's cheap, non-toxic, and effective eespecially if you treat your drains regularly (don't wait until they are clogged). Don't know your objection to the vinegar, but, whatever. Try the plunger - it just might be enough.

If you DO NOT have a garbage disposal, you can get a shop vac on it; clogs never expect that. It has to be a wet/dry vac, of course.
Next I agree with unscrewing the sink trap; it will likely smell really bad and leak all over, so get ready for that.
If you DO have a garbage disposal, I think a standard toilet plunger will do a good job. But fill the drain with as much water as you can; water is almost incompressible while air is very compressible; with mostly water, you get more pressure on the clog.
If something comes out, be ready to grab it! You don't want it getting stuck again. Wear plastic gloves.
If you even think you might want to feel around in there, unplug the disposal first.

the baking powder and vinigar is more armful than good.... u need to take the drain apart and run a small snake thru it to clear any debris that are inside
