I'm about to order a desk top from Dell and need advise to see if what I picked is a good system.

Module: Dell Precision Workstation 690(750W-32bit) Dual Core Intel Xenon Processor 5140, 2.33GHz, 4MB L2, 1333

Operating System: Windows XP Progfessional

Memory: 2GB DDR2 SDRAM FBD Memory, 667MHz, ECC(4 DIMMS)

Graphic Cards: 128MB PCle x16 nVidia Quadro FX550, Dual VGA or Dual DVI or DVI + VGA

Boot Hard Drive: 160GB SATA 3.0Gb/s, 7200 RPM Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst Cache

Second hard drive: Same as boot hard drive

Hard Drive Configuration: C4 All SATA drives, RAID 0, 2 Drive total config.

48XCDRW and 16XDVD+/-RW, w/Cyberlink PowerDVD and Roxio Creator

SATA/SAS Integrated Card for connecting hard drives.

I kind of picked them as they sounded good. But I don't know much about computers and all those numbers and letters.

I'll be using my old VGA monitor and speakers.

This will be for small business application. Not playing games on it.

Thanks

very nice.... just remember to get a warranty from those motherfuc*** dell... they have alot of problems.. you might wanna get a bigger hard drive since its a a small business... just incase comes in handy... SATA... good... 16x dvdrw good... you ram is very good speed is very high... you will get good performance...also your cpu is good... 4mb cache those things are expensive i have a 2 mb cache... 4 mb has to be around 500 bucks or more for that speed.. also the speed of the cpu is good..since you wont be playing games you graphic card is good.. unless your small business is about making games... movie editting (video editting) or like making a VHS to a DVD requires quite a lot of power from the grahic card, cpu, and ram... those are your necissary things which you would be needing... just want to add you should get a better graphic card a 256mb should be good because it will have faster speed, capable of handling more, sounds also to me its very good you should at least go with a Nvidia 7600 or an ATI above x700... jus tto say a very good system.. lol even though u don't know much about computers (as you wrote) looks like you do you picked all the good things...

Not bad at all. Although I would look into a better graphic card, 128MB will get old very soon. If you want a computer that would last long, you might want to look into at least 256MB or higher in graphic card. The processor is awesome, you got a descent amount of RAM and yet you might want to invest a bit more, but 2GB is well enough to satisfy.

hey hey hey buddy. You do not want to order a dell computer.
reason 1: dell computer support has when down. If something goes wrong with the computer you will have to spend 60 dollars to ship it to them and want about 6 week to get it back and find out the fixed it with refurbed parts.

reason 2: Dell has been going down in quality of there computers, They use to buy their computer from acer(aopen) and throw there name on it. Which in case you didn't know acer was is great. But now dell uses msi parts. msi part and the worst hardware to buy. they are cheap and break easily.

reason 3: dells are also strick about what will working there computers. such as you if you wanted to upgrade you will have to buy the part from dell that will cost you out the ***.

But all and all the computer specs seem good but I would go with hp because they use asus motherboards which are the best.

Good to go for small business. You could add a bit more Hard Drive capacity.

If you wish to add Gaming, add another 128 MB on the Graphic Card front.

It's a good setup but I would not choose Windows XP because it's very buggy.
Either go with Windows 2003 or RedHat Linux Enterprise version.
If you're going to use it for business use only, Don't get XP, you're asking for trouble.

By-the-way.

r u going to work with heavy graphic rendering" creating movies like the incridbles or Cars" or some stuff like that
if u r not, then this PC is an overkill for u
it will cost u alot of money without any use

All OK except the graphic card, it is old and will struggle with high end games, also I had the same card and it would not work with XP!

This is a great system, way overkill for everyday use.... you should tailor your system to meet your needs. What you have described here is a high-end system for running memory-hogging programs and doing many things at once.

What do you plan on using this machine for exactly?

seems fine except my paranoia factor about Raid 0. I'd reconsider and either do Raid 1 or Raid 0+1.
