It is a back pack because you called it a back pack. If you have a shoe in your hand it is not a glove...it is still a shoe.

A backpack is not a backpack even if you carry it on your shoulders. What you call a "backpack" is just an idea, but I see where you are coming from and I think you are right in a sense.

LOL! If my cat walks on a leash and fetches paperwads, is he still a cat? YEP! He sure is, little stinker.
A backpack is a backpack even when you choose to not carry it on your back. You look at it , it registers in your brain as a backpack, then yes, it's a backpack. Make sense? LOL
Just like my cat, he does doggy things, but he's still a cat.

It all depends on what you are using it for. If it begins to rain and you open it up and hold it over your head to keep from getting wet, it becomes an umbrella. If you cut yourself badly and are bleeding profusely, you could likely manipulate the backpack to serve as a tourniquet, in which case it would BECOME a tourniquet. And so forth.
"I used my backpack as an umbrella."
"I used my backpack as a tourniquet."
Of course, "as" is an expression of similitude. But if the backpack served the very same function as an umbrella or a tourniquet would according to the need at hand, I do not believe it would be wrong to refer to it by these names, respectively.

Yes, a backpack is a specific kind of bag, normally consisting of a bag and two straps so it can be easily worn on the back. Carrying it in a different manner does not change its nature.

It still is a back pack, you are just using it differently. This is a good example of how people misconstrue the world around them. Just because you use it for something it is not, doesn't change it's design and identification. If that were the case, then my car would be salvage truck because I am carrying clothes to a Salvation Army building, no it is still a car, just being used for another purpose.

It is still a backpack as long as that remains the purpose it was created for. You could call it a handbag but it wouldn't change its identity. Cut off the straps and you've recreated it. Then you can call it something else.
