I would like to believe that there is some kind of life after death...that way I could also believe that I would be reunited with friends and family who have gone on before me.
But the belief systems available to me aren't believable, and I hate committing to an after life insurance policy because the premiums are just too darn high, and there is no guarantee of a pay out.

Yes. When you die, your body has energy. As you may know, energy can not be made or dystroyed therefore it must go somewhere. That is your soul leaving your body. Leaving for heaven, hell or purgatory. Maybe you will just wonder the earth for a bit... I dunno about that one. As a spiritualist Medium, I have had contact with a dead animal. Prooving that life after death is not just for humans. People can call me crazy but when they feel the vibrations themselfs and they hear another voice in there head, they know it's real. I can tell it is another voice because it is uncontrolliable and I can hear the different tone. I hope this helps.

There has to be--I've lived hell here on earth while being married and part of my husband's family. There has to be SOME compensation for all that I've been through.

I do.... I believe in "regeneration", kinda a belief of my own. When someone dies, his/her "soul" goes to another one's body. Of course, he/she can't carry any memory of the deceased body, so he/she won't remember anything when entered into the new body. I know it sounds weird, but that's how I think of afterlife.
