Just a habit when thinking and chatting. I always have to go out and smoke when talking to friends. And funny as it is after talking with my ex-fiance' I always have to take a s**t. No joke!

Because he is impatient when the speaker is taking too long to express thoughts and your friend wants to talk. He knew in seconds what the speaker takes long minutes to express. He can find no acceptable way to voice this, so to tolerate it he paces back and forth, at least spending some of his impatient energy.

He has a disorder we call " Pedocommunicitis". it is largely found in the male population and symptoms occur when on the phone with the opposite gender. Relief can usually be found by changing the subject of the conversation to sports.
Hope this helps.

He knows it bothers you, so he does it just to drive you crazy!
When people are talking on the phone, they are not getting the visual cues they are used to during a conversation. Moving around presents different stimuli to the eyes.

It's just probably something he does that HE doesn't even know he's doing. I pace when I'm upset about something.

that depends on who he is talking too, or does he do it with everybody? maybe he gets nervous with you around or maybe it is just a bad habit he picked up somewhere. tell him it bothers you and maybe he will try to stop. it could be that he doesnt realize he is doing it. hope this helps some!!
