King Fortis the Brave about a pair of twelve-year-old twins that are pulled into a magical realm where they find themselves in the middle of a battle for control of the land. It is full of action and humor than any young adult (or for that matter older adult) will love!

Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs is a great classic, (nothing to do with the movies) It has some scenes that can be a bit raw, maybe not for under 12 year old, but its a great adventure story,
Try The City of the Beasts by Isabel Allende, set in the Amazon the first part of a trilogy, with "The Kingdom of the Golden Dragon" and "The Forest of the Pygmies" , again, amazing story and Isabel Allende is one of the best writers in the world. Read about it here and decide for yourself:

There's Harry Potter, one of my favourite stories ( I'm 22) or the 3 Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King ( not horror) The Lord Of the Rings, so many more..

SCIENCE FICTION Everyone ignores sci-fi however actually that a few books are close to part philosophy. Read Stranger in a Strange Land via Robert A. Heinlein, Prey via Michael Crichton, and 2001: A Space Odyssey or Rendevous With Rama via Arthur C. Clarke. Plus, I agree that Agatha Christie is a need to-learn. After Shakespeare and the Bible, she has offered probably the most quantity of books international ever. Her first-class are And Then There Were None, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Murder at the Orient Express

Chinese Cinderella--Its an autobiography by Adeline Yen Mah. Its the story of an unwanted chinese daughter who is considered "bad luck" because her mother died 2 weeks after she was born. Adeline had to endure a lot in life, but she survived and triumphed, and is now a well known author as well as a Doctor. Her story is touching and inspiring.
MY STORY by Dave Pelzer--Another autobiography. I think Pelzer is the 4th worst abuse case in America. This autobiography tells you of the hurt and abuse he had to go through, life in foster homes, and how he succeeded in life. Today, Dave Pelzer is helping out other people.
THE KITE RUNNER by Khalil Gibran--its fiction. It is a story of the life of 2 boys in Afghanistan. I read it a while ago, and I haven't been able to find a book as good as it. It is so realistic (not everything is "happily ever after"), unexpected (very), touching, haunting, and simply brilliant. It is a bestseller, and I definitely recommend it =)
Princess Diaries Series--A fun series for teens. Meg Cabot really captures the hearts and interests of teens with her books. They are so teen-realistic, and I'm sure you'll enjoy them.
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Series--A you-can't-put-me-down books series. I read it during the summer when I wanted to read something fun. I definitely recommend it and I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well =)
