i ownmy own garage worked on customers car july 12 still have not been paid or customer has come to pick the car up was wondering how long i wait till i take their car for payment

Actually, you have possession. To claim ownership, you must first file a mechanics lien for the work you did plus storage fees. The owner will be given a certain amount of time to pay up and claim the car. If they fail to do so, the court will transfer title to you.

When the storage fees and repairs equal the value of the car, I would imagine.
