Koreans believe that the ancestor "Dahn-geun" founded Korea. The first empire/kingdom in Korea was Gojosun, which Dahn-geun is said to have founded. This character is mysterious, and, somewhat like North American myths, sails away after his reign, never to return.
According to legend, a bear and tiger were given garlic and an herb, if they could finish eating it for 100 days and not see sunlight, they would be given a chance to become human. The bear finished her task, the tiger gave up before the 100 days were over. The bear turned into a beautiful woman and the heaven king married her, and they had a son: Dahn-geun.
Hope that helps!

The Kingdom of Korea existed long ago contemporary to The Chinese Empire and Japan - - - during the course of time both China and Japan conquered Korea, mostly keeping its royal family as hostages and ruling the peninsula in their name. Japan held Korea through World War Two - - - after the war when it was decided to 'restore' Korea the Americans & British & Russians argued amongst themselve over how the Koreans should govern themseles. They settled on spitting the pennisula in two - - - the south would be nominally a democracy while the North became a 'communist' country. The Word Communist is misused. Despite the use of the word North Korea and Cuba are NOT Communist countries. They are Socialist-Dictatorships. In North Korea where once Royal Kings held way now it is Kim Il Jong who is Supreme Leader. I wish I could give you a few names to play with but my history books are buried way to deep. There are several good books on Korea - - - go check with an Asian studies class at your area college. Peace.
