I think that every couple of decades or what not a new group of movies will become classics. It's a giant cycle, and every new generation will have a new set of "classics"...weather or not those from the generation will agree with that.

I think films that have social and historical overtones now might stand the test of time. The new film with Nick Cage about 9/11, "World Trade Center" (while I have not yet seen it) may prove to be one that lives on. I can see that being re-made someday by another generation, if for nothing else the historical significance.
Of the films I have seen so far since the millenium, the only one that really comes to mind as classic is Walk the Line. partly because it was a very well made film, with excellent casting and directing, but also because Johnny Cash was an icon in American music for over 40 years, and helped shape many genres of music today.

I think we will find a different type of classic in the 21st century. I think movies like the Harry Potter series, Pirates of the Carribean and the like will be the classics of tomorrow.

Most of the movies that have come out recently have been miserably directed etc. There are a few exceptions, (Pirates,Sahara..) however I don't think that movies these days carry the same oomph that the classics of the 1900's had because the plots are tired.

I think that "Brokeback Mountain" will become a classic because its the first film to feature a love story between two men in a romantic way. Does this mean that I like the movie because I picked it? NO! But I have this feeling that because its a "first', it will become a classic.

Not all of them but I am sure there will be some.
As we just started the century, it's difficult to say now...
The Harry Potter's - because of the topic which is quite different than all other movies.
Lord of The Rings - the nice scenes, good story
Polar Express - excellent family movie and I think all movie about Santa are a hit
Shrek - excellent animation movie, graphics are amazing

Good question. Nowadays they make the movie to get some money for it,....the movie being "pretty" good only for a year or so, but they (the prducers) forget that this is not what they are supposed to do. In the old days they made a movie because they had a good ideea and wanted to share it with the rest of the world, not like nowadays

I think there will always be classics being created. As long as people are creative -- there will be new and better creations. Movies are no exception.
I think The Passion of Christ will be a classic. Mel Gibson aside, it is a classic.
