G'day Slim,
Thanks for the question.
As noted above, the worst thing is that you could get electrocuted. The next worse thing is that your system may get fried by a power surge.
Experts recommend getting a good surge protector for your computer and its components. However, the best thing is to unplug your computer, your components and your phone lines. No surge protector can protect a computer from a lightning surge. You should make sure your surge protector is on.
While it means you can't use your computer for half an hour, it does protect your computer.
I have enclosed more sources for future reference.
Regards

The worst thing that could happen is that you could be electrocuted and die. Is that bad enough?
Here's a copy/paste from the NOAA:
Summary of Lightning Safety Tips for Inside the Home
1.
Avoid contact with corded phones
2.
Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. If you plan to unplug any electronic equipment, do so well before the storm arrives.
3.
Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry.
4.
Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
5.
Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.

Well lemme see here...the biggest idiot seems to be Godess.....most people believe that turning your system off will protect it. Not So! It would need to be physically disconnected from the phone line and or cable and also disconnected from the wall receptacle. If lightning were to strike directly to your house wiring or telephone or cable wiring the lightning wouldnt give two hoots if your system was on or not! It is still connected in the path that the current would take to get to ground.

lightning could strike and send a power surge through your computer frying everything. Other than that, not much.
