I think that answer depends on where the person is from. What I may think the essence of America is I'm sure is alot different than what a third-world country thinks the essense of America is..which I don't think would be too complimentary. I live here, and I'm not as proud of America now as I used to be a long time ago. I think it's "essence" has changed. Unfortunately not for the better. But that's just my opinion.

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

this is the writing in the statue of liberty.

Not being an American myself, and often cringing at america's actions in foreign and domestic policy, in its failure in caring for its own tired and poor, in its imperialistic over-reaching dumbed-down popular culture, in its greed is good credo, there is still something pure, at least for me in the essence of America.

Leave the past behind, leave classes, birth, the old world behind and come. Pursue happiness, a better life.

Become an American and remain German, Mexican, whatever.
All are welcome, all are America.

(I do know that from this to the truth one has to reach far, but it's still a very powerfull idea, and one that still moves thousands of immigrants each year)

Even if George W is satan.

Irony and conflict, with the ideal of the right to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, equality and openness, crashing against the harsh reality of welfare, urban poverty, homeless, high healthcare costs, border security, terrorism, illegal immigration, racial conflict, etc.
