Hi, this is essentially a gradient (or slope) question.
Gradients are found by this simple rule: " Rise over Run"
and can be calculated by this formula:
(y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)

where the data points are (x1, y1) and (x2, y2). As you can see, the formula calls for corresponding values of x and y.

now we're ready to answer the questions:

Qn 1) The slope of a line passing through (2, 9) and (-4, 8) is:
(8 - 9) / (-4 - 2)
giving you (-1)/(-6)
Since the negative on the numerator and denominator cancel each other out, the answer is 1/6

Qn 2) The slope of a line passing through (2, 5) and (2, 7) is:
(7 - 5) / (2 - 2)
giving you 2 / 0
which mathematically does not make sense because anything divided by 0 is infinity.
Thus the slope for this question is infinity or undefined. This can be explained by the fact that the line passing through the data points of (2, 5) and (2, 7) is a vertical line, which has essentially a gradient that extends infinitely.

Qn 3)The slope of a line passing through (0, 8) and (-7, 8) is
(8 - 8) / (-7 - 0)
giving you 0 / (-7)
which gives you 0

this can be explained by the fact that the line passing through data points (0, 8) and (-7, 8) is a horizontal line, which as zero gradient.

Final answer:
Qn 1) 1/6
Qn 2) infinity / undefined
Qn 3) 0

Hope this helps. :D

1. Rise = 9-8=1, Run = 2-(-4) =6, Slope=1/6
2. Rise = 5-7=-2, Run = 2-2=0, Slope=-2/0 or infinity
3. Rise = 8-8=0, Run = 0-(-7)=7, Slope=0/7 = 0

the slope is y=mx+b, m being the slope. so take (y2-y1) divide by(x2-x1) to get the slope.
1. 8-9=-1
-4-2=-6 slope is 5
2. 7-5 divide by 2-2
slope is 2

3. 8-8 divide by -7-0
slope is -7

slope=gradient=tan theta=y/x
1=y2-y1/x2-x1=8-9/2-(-4)=-1/6
2.=7-5/2-2=2/0=indeterminate => parallel to the y-axis
3.=8-8/-7-0=0/-7=0=>parallel to the x-axis

slope, m=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

SO, m=(8-9)/(-4-2)=-1/-6=1/6=0.167
m=(7-5)/(2-2)=2/0, which is undefined, so you have a vertical line at x=2
m=(8-8)/(-7-0)=0/-7=0, or zero slope, or a horizontal line at y=8

slope = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)

You only need one of these illustrated for you. Follow the formula or read other responses, bro.

1)
(x1 , y1) = (2 , 9)
(x2 , y2) = (-4 , 8)

slope = (8 - 9) / (-4 - 2)
=(-1) / (-6)
=1/6

1. 1/6
2. undefined - the denomenator comes out to zero, so its a vertical line
3. 0 - so its a horizontal line
