He lived within the same city limits as I do and he said it should have been settled by now. Do I need a lawyer?

Contact the probate court in your county and ask to get a copy of the probate file. (You'll have to pay for the copies.) You will get a copy of everything that has been done thus far in the probate process, including a copy of the will.

After you do this, you'll find out who the executor of the will is, and if you were supposed to get anything.

First talk to the executor (the person who was supposed to settle the estate). It may be that the estate is held up in probate for some reason. If that doesn't work, get a lawyer.

Go and get a copy of his will.
