Is there a computer program I can buy that enables you to write your own music score on the computer and then you can play it back to yourself to see what it sounds like. As a student studying music, I'm doing quite a bit of composing. Some for small ensembles of different instruments. It would be quite handy if there was such a product where I could write out the score on the computer, and be able to have it all played back to me, to see what it all sounds like together.

P.S Even if you know of a computer product that just does the scoring on the computer (without being able to hear it played) I'm interested in names of products et. Thanks

There used to be a program called MusicWrite that enabled one to compose music by dragging and dropping notes. The version I had didn't cost much so it seems reasonable that there may be some freeware programs that have similar functionality, and there may be more powerful programs that have demo versions you can try before spending money.

Also, you might consider going to a site like http://www.zdnet.com/ and visiting the downloads section. When you're there, you can browse the audio software and search by such criteria as license type, Windows version, and so on. An error is made here and there when programs are categorized, so read all the documentation that comes with any program you try to make sure a program listed as free really is free, for example.
