Sonny Crockett was one part of the 80's duo Crocket and Tubbs from Miami Vice. According to the insert on Jan Hammer's "escape from television" CD:
"Drawn from the third show of 1984 ('hit list') 'crockets theme' framed a beach montage scene focusing on Sonny and his family (under police protection at a 'safe house') "from there it evolved into his theme" says Jan "a whole new side to the character of Sonny Crockett that nobody knew before". In its longer form, an extended 12-inch, remixed with studio master Francois Krevorkian, it became one of the highest instrumental hits of the year in Europe."
When in 1985 the 'miami vice theme' hit the billboard hot 100 singles chart, the miami vice soundtrack album went on to spend eleven weeks at number one - becoming the first TV theme to do so since Henry Mancini's 'Theme from Peter Gunn' in 1959.
The Miami Vice soundtrack album sold over four million copies, earning Jan Hammer, its composer, producer, performer and arranger "Best pop instrumental performance" and "best instrumental composition" Grammy awards in February 1986.
Jan Hammer incidentally was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and "began playing piano at age four".
