Of players killed while playing the game pitchers are most likely. Though the last player killed in Baseball was an outfielder struck by a pitch.

Except for steroid use which would make corner infielders and outfielders likely to live shorter lives I can think of no baseball activity which would decrease a person's lifespan. The party life that often accompanies being a star killed players like Mantle and Ruth. Dozens of non-stars have died in alchohol related car crashes.

In terms of not living to see 60 Outfielders seem cursed. Plane crashes, freak accidents, murder and disease have laid low many outfielders before 40. Singleton and Bostock are two that were shot while sitll in the prime of thier careers. Clemente is one who died in a plane crash. In WW II many died in the war.

So I'd be curious what they meant by mortality. On field deaths have been rare and last one was over 50 years ago.

I would have to say the pitcher. A lot of balls get hit hard back up the middle and many have hit the pitcher in the head because he's in a pretty vulnerable position after throwing. Regardless of who you root for, you never want to see that happen to any player...
