Any damage to the ducts? Cost?

I had it done once and after seeing what they do, I thought it was a waste of money. No damage to the ducts or anything, but they do have to cut holes in it to get the vacuum and air hose in, they patch them up though. After they were done I looked down in the ducts, and several feet in there was still dust. They only get around the vents and furnace, not in the middle of the ducts.

If you get a better filter for the main blower unit (AC or heat), that will prevent dust from getting in the vents. You can also get vent filters that get the dust as it enters the room, as an extra layer of protection. Any hardware store should have them.

If the vents are really caked with muck, it might be worth it; however if the cleaners don't seal off the vents during the process they could unsettle stuff you don't want in the air. The house should be aired out afterward for a while.

We checked into this when our kids had asthma; the doctor told us to avoid that because stirring the stuff up can make things worse in the short term. Our vents weren't bad either; once we left CA for PA, the asthma vanished in a few days.

So my conclusion is that you should only do it if the vents are caked with crud or if you have a special medical situation, in which case you should make sure the company does a very good job of containing the dust. Otherwise, your body is designed to filter out a little dust just fine; most people do that all the time with no problem.

From an HVAC tech...don't pay for it. Not worth it. I would guess 95% of the homes that get their ducts cleaned don't need it.
