I do not think poor hygiene is the number 1 reason for unpleasant odors but cleanliness is extremely important in this area. I use Dr Bronners peppermint castile liquid soap, a few drops in a small bowl of water several times per day and while showering.Poor health also can contribute to many "smells". Drink plenty of water and try to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juices that are alkalizing. Wear cotton underwear if possible too.

A woman's vagina has a natural odor even when it is healthy - it is pheremones. If the odor is very strong and "fishy", that could mean vaginitis (Candida) yeast infection.
This is also the same fungus that results in jock itch, athlete's foot, thrush (white tongue), ringworm and other skin rashes.

Odor is a sign of some type of infection going on in the body.
Nature talks to us that way...(please do not douche...it throws off the ph level of the body...)

Genitals are supposed to smell. However, if they smell bad, and if your discharge is an odd colour, it is probably a sign you have an infection.
Edit- DOUCHING IS NOT HEALTHY! It messes with the pH balance of the vagina, and that is very bad indeed!

A vaginal odour can be caused by numerous things, poor hygiene, infection, blood to name but few. Even eating some foods can give rise to odour, for example: garlic.

I never have an odor unless my boy friend comes in me. guys *** really stinks. otherwise if you are sweaty from the day. otherwise i can only think of if you dont wash it.

If it is fishy it is a yeast infection or if it gets really bad then you need to see a Doctor ASAP.
