how do i know if my dvd player takes plus or minus?

my friend wants to burn me a dvd disc, but we can't figure out what type of dvd it takes. the stickers on the laptop (a two-year-old Compaq Presario V4000) haven't been removed, but they don't tell us anything about the dvd types that can be read by the drive. can someone PLEASE help me out?

I looked up your computer, it will take both kinds of discs. It can burn both DVD-R and DVD+R. The only diference between -R and +R is that with +R's you can make multiple layers, meaning you can have more data on the disc. In turn though, they are more expensive. Both will work though, so get whichever better suits your needs.
