IF you are serious about having an acting career, then you need to start RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW, in this present moment in time, and do not delay one more second.
No excuses --you need to start this moment.
So, what can you do this moment to get you going forward in your acting career?
1. All actors and actresses need pictures to show to their possible employers and on their auditions. DO NOT PAY hundreds of dollars for pictures. YOu can get cheaper pictures. Just use pictures that do not have thousands of things in the background. YOU DO NOT need those five hundred dollar picture packages. Those companies are just in the picture-selling business and they make a good living off of unsuspecting actresses and actors-to-be.
2. Get a promising photography student, college or high school , to do your portfolio pictures. You just need to pay for supplies, paper and printing and you can tell the student that he can use your name on his resume in the future, that you've seen his work and you vouch for his portrait work.
3. Go to your local newspapers and check for auditions of plays that ar ecoming out soon. GO THERE and be part of it and keep doing this over and over and over until you have a good part in a play and until you are satisfied that you've done enough.
4. Do not tell anyone -of your acting ambitions Just keep it to yourself and keep working at it. This is best for you and you don't have to hear anyone's negative reactions to the career you've chosen.
5. Look all over your community for audition ads. CHeck Backstage magazine and BILLBOARD magazine all the time .
6. Read Ross Reports. This magazine has all the names and contract information , numbers etc. of all the studios in New York and all the important studios in Hollywood and in other places.
7. DO SOMETHING EACH DAY to further your acting career. YES, something each day , even if it's something little. Like today, you can go to Staples and spend under twenty dollars for business cards that says "ACTOR" - Call ..and then pu t your telephone number in there or your email address. (safer for your email address but more convenient for your callers to include phone and email address).
8. Go to your library and ask to use their display case for one month. Set up a display about acting --Do some writings, take some pictures of yourself acting, make a beautiful display and use a business card in there , and you'll have some public exposure without having to pay any money at all for this exposure.
10. Get the newspaper -- VILLAGE VOICE -- This paper will have tons of advertisements for jobs in acting, modeling, tv work and more. BE careful wtih the advertisements. ALWAYS< if you are under age , tell your parents everything . YOu need to be safe. DO not go places alone without telling someone where you are going to be.
11. Pray (not necessarily in this order of course. YOu can pray first you know. Prayer changes things for the better and it' always helps to pray. So, just do it. Pray for your own health and your family's happiness and for your succcess in the acting field.
12. Make a demo tape or cd. You can do this in anyone's basement or studio or small apartment. Just cut out all the background noises and make the tape of you acting or singing etc. This willl be your introduction to the acting career.
13. With Ross reports, you'll have addresses where to send demo tapes or cassettes or cds.
14. DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT spend hundreds of dollars on any photographs. These photographs do not guarantee you anything and they do not even let you get your foot in the door. YOur high school or college-student photos are sufficient.
Get a high school kid who is interested in photography , perhaps one that is in the photo or art club or who is chooing photography as a career. YOu will be happy with his work.
15. IF you are going on any audition and something is NOT right, do not go. On all auditions, if you can, if you are underage, take someone with you to the audition . You need to be protected whether you know it or not.
16. Go to many plays during the summer, when they have those free screenings for Shakespeare in the park. Volunteer to do any acting parts or acting -related parts that you can get.
17. KEEP building and re-builing your resume to keep it current with your latest schooling or experience or work information.
18. Make sure that you have an email address. You can get free email without even owning a computer. Go to the library and isgn up to use their computers for half hour or more. You can then print out what you want there. And you can go to hotmail.com or to yahoo.com to get totally FREE email accounts.
19. Start all over at idea number one and keep on going and keep on keeping on. This is where you begin your acting career.

Wherever you are right now.
Don't wait to move to Hollywood or New York. The more experience that you get the better you will be.
Start acting in local plays. See you you can get a local agent and go on rehearsals for local commercials.
If you do these things locally, by the time you move to Los Angeles you will have a Reel or Tape that you can send out to the big Agents in Los Angeles.
And you will have gained great experience.
So don't wait - start acting now.

Well if you don't have acting experience BEFORE you get to a big city you're pretty much screwed. I would say start in your home town. Get as much experience as you can in school, community theater etc.
Then move to a bigger city like NYC or LA or CHI. Where you can send your demo reel and headshots to agents.
